Zika Virus Update: A message on behalf of Robert Dana Bradshaw, MD, MPH, Chair, EVMS Academic Occupational Health & Safety Committee

As you are likely aware due to significant media coverage, on February 1, 2016, the World Health Organization declared the Zika virus outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.

As spring break approaches and more travel is expected to the Caribbean, Central and South America and other countries affected by this virus, we want to make sure that our community is knowledgeable about the concern and takes appropriate precautions.

Recently, the Virginia Department of Health has summarized relevant information from the Centers for Disease Control  and Prevention (CDC) and other public health resources for higher education communities. Read the Zika Virus Update.

To make sure you have the most current information regarding Zika virus, please go to the CDC website http://www.cdc.gov/zika/. This website has links to frequently asked questions, details on testing and diagnosis for health-care providers and information specific to concerns for pregnant women. Note that this virus is transmitted primarily by certain mosquitoes species to humans in affected areas, and not by person-to-person transmission, except in some reported cases of infected males to female partners through intimate sexual contact or from a pregnant mother to a baby.

Regular updates are also provided weekly through subscription to CDC’s MMWR.

If you have additional concerns as a student or employee, please contact us in Occupational Health at 757.446.5870 as needed.
