Incoming residents and fellows must provide documentation of proof of immunity to:

  • Measles
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Varicella
  • Tetanus/diphtheria/acellular pertussis

Proof of immunity is either documentation of a vaccine given or a lab report showing a positive IgG antibody titer.

Hepatitis B

Proof of immunization for hepatitis B and a positive antibody titer is also required. If an incoming student has not received hepatitis B immunization in the past, they can be vaccinated after school begins in Occupational Health.

Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis surveillance is also required. A two-step tuberculin skin test (TST or PPD), aka a tuberculin skin placed and read and repeated again in 1-3 weeks, is required if the incoming student has not had a previous positive tuberculin skin test.

If the resident or fellow has had a previous positive TST/PPD, the following are required: a chest X-ray report from the previous 12 months, documentation of evaluation for treatment with antibiotic prophylaxis and completion of the TB Symptom Surveillance Questionnaire.

How to Meet the Requirement

Please print and complete the Incoming Resident and Fellows Form and send to the Occupational Health office along with copies of your immunization record, lab results and x-ray reports if indicated.

The deadline for submitting health requirements is May 11. Failure to comply with the School's health requirements may delay the start of the residency or fellowship program. If you are a former EVMS student, please call 757.446.5870  to schedule an appointment for a TB surveillance update.

Physical Exam

Incoming residents and fellows must have a physical exam performed by a physician, nurse practitioner or physician's assistant who is not in their residency or fellowship program and who is not a relative within four months prior to the residency start date. Residents and fellows are responsible for the costs of all health requirements including the physical exam, immunizations, antibody titers, tuberculin skin testing and chest x-ray if indicated. Occupational Health cannot perform the pre-matriculation physical examination.

Do not return medical forms to the program you are entering. Please keep a copy of original documents for your personal records.

Drug Screen

Employment with EVMS is contingent upon the successful completion of a drug screen. Drug screens can be scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00am and 3:00pm during the months of May and June. Drug screens are administered in the Occupational Health office located at the address above. Please make your appointment by calling 757.446.5870. If you are not able to have a drug screen in May or June, you will be given an appointment during your orientation period.

If there are any questions regarding the mandatory requirements, please contact Occupational Health at 757.446.5870 or email OccHealth@EVMS.edu.
