The Faculty Achievement Awards honor outstanding performance by EVMS and EVMS Medical Group faculty and will be presented at the 2023 EVMS Service and Recognition Awards Ceremony.

Procedure

The awards are presented in seven categories; find descriptions of each award below. When you are ready, fill out the Faculty and Educational Excellence Award Nomination Form. Be sure to have all of your required documentation accessible before beginning the nomination process. You will receive a confirmation email once complete.

Documentation

The nominator provides the name, title and department of the nominee along with documentation including:
 
Required:
  • an updated curriculum vitae
  • a letter of nomination not to exceed one-page (or statement for the Educational Excellence Awards) describing the accomplishments of the nominee. If longer than one page, only the first page to be included in the application review.
Discretionary:
  • up to two one-page (not to exceed one-page) letters from colleagues, peers or others in support of the nomination. If longer than one page, only the first page to be included in the application review.
The nominator’s letter/statement and the candidate's CV are the essential documents reviewed by the Awards Committee in selecting the recipients of these awards. Therefore, every effort should be made in the nominator's letter to highlight the nominee's accomplishments, especially those that may not be evident in the nominee's CV pertinent to the award category.
 

Resubmission

If you submitted a nomination last year which was not selected for an award, you may resubmit for one additional cycle using letters of support from the prior year - the exception being the Rising Star Award, which requires a new submission. All resubmissions require 2 items: (1) an updated CV and (2) an updated nominator's letter (to include a description of what the nominee has done over the past 12 months). All other resubmissions, which are outside of this timeframe, require a new submission with new documentation.

Nominations are being accepted through Monday, September 11, 2023. Nominations will NOT be accepted after this date.
 

Awards

This award recognizes up to two exceptional faculty members who:

  • Demonstrate commitment to the profession and to the school's mission, vision and values.
  • As applicable to the focus of the faculty member's work:
    • Receive outstanding evaluations for teaching performance and/or clinical supervision of medical/graduate students or residents/fellows.
    • Establish a recognized research program evidenced by extramural funding, invited presentations, abstracts and publications. 
    • Make significant improvements to clinical care or to a clinical program.
    • Contribute in a major way to committees and/or administrative functions affecting the mission, goals and welfare of EVMS/EVMS Medical Group.
  • Seek opportunity to improve or gain new skills.

Eligibility and Award

All EVMS and EVMS Medical Group faculty members (salaried, non-salaried, and VA Medical Center) in good standing with at least one year of service to the institution are eligible for these awards. Nominees must be in no more than their sixth year of continuous service at EVMS. The nominees may not have had any formal disciplinary action or report of professional misconduct within 36 months prior to the nomination date and must meet or exceed an overall performance rating of "Exceeds Expectation" on their most recent faculty annual review. Each recipient will receive a $500 monetary stipend and a commemorative award. A faculty member recognized with the President's Rising Star Award is ineligible to receive this award again (see listing here).

Presented on behalf of EVMS Development and Alumni Relations, this award celebrates committment to the EVMS Foundation. The award recognizes a faculty member who acts as an ambassador and assists EVMS in communicating with donors about the mission/programs of the institution and who:

  • Demonstrate commitment to the profession and to the school's mission, vision and values
  • Volunteer in leadership fundraising activities for the EVMS Foundation.
  • Support the EVMS Foundation with a monetary donation.
  • Refer grateful patients and/or prospective donors to EVMS Development and Alumni Relations.
  • Participate in meetings with prospective and/or current donors (participation includes tours, presentations, support with donor proposals, and/or meeting with donors.)

Eligibility and Award

All EVMS and EVMS Medical Group faculty members (salaried, non-salaried, and VA Medical Center) in good standing with at least one year of service to the institution are eligible to receive recognition with this award, provided that the criteria listed above are not an assigned part of the individual’s job duties. The nominees may not have had any formal disciplinary action or report of professional misconduct within 36 months prior to the nomination date and must meet or exceed an overall performance rating of “Exceeds Expectation” on their most recent faculty annual review. The recipient is selected by EVMS Development and Alumni Relations and will receive a $500 stipend and a commemorative award. A faculty member recognized with the Philanthropy Champion Award is ineligible to receive this award again (see listing here).

The Award for Community Service recognizes the importance of sustained contributions to the external community that create connections with EVMS. The award recognizes faculty members who are exemplary in their professional service outside the institution, providing leadership and making contributions to the wider community. Service to nonprofit, philanthropic, public service, and communitarian entities, and/or leading critical and valuable community initiatives, are some examples of desired involvement. This award recognizes faculty members who:

  • Demonstrate commitment to the profession and to the school's mission, vision and values.
  • Demonstrate a sustained effort in community outreach and professional service. 
  • Utilize imaginative or innovative approaches to service.  
  • Serve as a community service model to staff, students and colleagues.  
  • Present evidence of the success of the service provided to the wider community through scholarly output, community impact including charitable or philanthropic contributions, and/or student learning. 

Eligibility and Award

All EVMS and EVMS Medical Group faculty (salaried, non-salaried, and VA Medical Center) in good standing with at least three years of service to the institution are eligible for this award. The nominees may not have had any formal disciplinary action or report of professional misconduct within 36 months prior to the nomination date and must meet or exceed an overall performance rating of "Exceeds Expectation" on their most recent faculty annual review. The recipient will receive a $500 monetary stipend and a commemorative award. A faculty member recognized with a President’s Award for Community Service is not eligible to receive the same award for a period of five years (see listing here).

This award recognizes an EVMS/EVMS Medical Group faculty member who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to and involvement in the mentoring of junior faculty/students/residents/fellows and who has enhanced their career development through mentoring, and serving as a professional role model. This award recognizes faculty members who: 

  • Demonstrate commitment to the profession and to the school's mission, vision and values.
  • Mentor junior faculty/students/residents/fellows to promote their professional development. 
  • Offer sound counsel and valuable information to their mentees in order to advance and develop the mentee's own path to academic and professional success.
  • Generously share their valuable time to be accessible to their mentees.
  • Impart guidance and expertise in encouraging and critiquing the mentee's research, teaching, and/or scholarly works. 
  • Involve peers and mentees in publications, grants and conferences, as well as readily share knowledge of such opportunities. 
  • Encourage and include mentees in networking activities with other professionals.
  • Promote and make others aware of the contributions and value of their mentees.
  • Display evidence of mentees completing their defined projects (e.g., grants, publications, promotional goals).
  • Serve as role models for their colleagues by maintaining high standards for excellence with their own discipline and the greater institution.
  • Are recognized scholars with demonstrated success in their own area of expertise.

This award recognizes more the quality and outcomes of the mentoring relationship, and outputs achieved rather than simply the number of students mentored.

Eligibility and Award

All EVMS and EVMS Medical Group faculty members (salaried, non-salaried, and VA Medical Center) in good standing with at least one year of service to the institution are eligible for this award. The nominees may not have had any formal disciplinary action or report of professional misconduct within 36 months prior to the nomination date and must meet or exceed an overall performance rating of "Exceeds Expectation" on their most recent faculty annual review. The recipient will receive a $500 monetary stipend and a commemorative award. A faculty member previously recognized with a President’s Award for Mentoring is not eligible to receive the same award for a period of three years (see listing here).

The Award for Research and Innovation Achievement recognizes an EVMS/EVMS Medical Group faculty member who demonstrates exceptional creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship in their academic research. While full career accomplishments will be considered when a nominee is evaluated, special emphasis will be placed upon research and innovation while at EVMS. This award recognizes faculty members who:

  • Exemplify a track record in basic and translational research that builds on the continued growth of the EVMS research culture and environment, going beyond research collaboration to advance innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Have a proven track record of translating research into viable commercial/social enterprises, products or services.
  • Seek to encourage groundbreaking ideas, unorthodox problem-solving, and the entrepreneurial spirit within academia.
  • Have notable successes to include foundational or seminal research publications, patent generation, licensing, startups, innovative programs, nationally funded research collaborations, etc.
  • Recognize past achievements, but also encourage future ventures and aim to inspire the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.

Eligibility and Award

All EVMS and EVMS Medical Group faculty (salaried, non-salaried, and VA Medical Center) in good standing with at least three years of service to the institution are eligible for this award. The nominees may not have had any formal disciplinary action or report of professional misconduct within 36 months prior to the nomination date and must meet or exceed an overall performance rating of "Exceeds Expectation" on their most recent faculty annual review. The recipient will receive a $500 monetary stipend and a commemorative award.

This award recognizes up to four EVMS/EVMS Medical Group faculty members who excel in their work and consistently perform beyond expectations in more than one of the mission areas: teaching, research/discovery, clinical care, administrative service. This award recognizes faculty members who: 

  • Demonstrate commitment to the profession and to the school's mission, vision and values and its strategic plan.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism.
  • Have served as an inspiration and role model to the EVMS community.
  • Surpass performance requirements of his/her position with distinction and merit and has achieved an exceptional record of continued extraordinary productivity (creative activities or research productivity). 
  • Promote or improve the image of EVMS and EVMS Medical Group. 

Eligibility and Award

All EVMS and EVMS Medical Group faculty members (salaried, non-salaried, and VA Medical Center) in good standing with at least one year of service to the institution are eligible to receive recognition with this award. The nominees may not have had any formal disciplinary action or report of professional misconduct within 36 months prior to the nomination date and must meet or exceed an overall performance rating of "Exceeds Expectation" on their most recent faculty annual review. Each recipient will receive a $500 monetary stipend and a commemorative award. A faculty member previously recognized with a President's Award for Excellence is not eligible to receive the same award for a period of five years (see listing here).

The Award for Outstanding Achievement is the institution's highest honor and is presented to an EVMS/EVMS Medical Group full-time faculty member whose achievements exemplify EVMS' mission. This faculty member:  

  • Demonstrates commitment to the profession and to the school's mission, vision and values.
  • Demonstrates leadership, accomplishment and recognition in these areas of endeavor. 
  • Demonstrates outstanding reliability and cooperation.   
  • Encourages others to support and work towards the public good through innovative initiatives.
  • Exemplifies outstanding conduct and exceeds expectations in the performance of duties over multiple years of service. 
  • Exemplifies EVMS' core values at a superior level, continually fostering pride within EVMS.

Eligibility and Award 

All EVMS and EVMS Medical Group full-time faculty members (salaried, non-salaried, and VA Medical Center) in good standing with at least one year of service to the institution are eligible to receive recognition with this award. The nominees may not have had any formal disciplinary action or report of professional misconduct within 36 months prior to the nomination date and must meet or exceed an overall performance rating of "Exceeds Expectation" on their most recent faculty annual review. The recipient will receive a $1,000 monetary stipend and a commemorative award. A faculty member previously recognized with a President's Award for Outstanding Achievement is not eligible to receive this award again (see listing here).

All FFAOE members in good standing with at least one year of service to the institution are eligible to receive recognition with this award. The nominees may not have had any formal disciplinary action or report of professional misconduct within 36 months prior to the nomination date and must meet or exceed an overall performance rating of "Exceeds Expectation" on their most recent faculty annual review. Each recipient will receive a $500 monetary stipend and a commemorative award. A faculty member previously recognized with a Fine Family Academy of Educators Award for Educational Excellence is not eligible to receive the same award for a period of five years (see listing here).

 

Award for Educational Innovation in Curriculum Development, Teaching, or Assessment (QTY. 1)

This award will recognize an individual for having developed an innovative portion of a curriculum or played a significant role in the design of a curriculum following educationally sound principles; or adopted and successfully incorporated a new teaching method or an assessment tool. This award is meant to encourage faculty members of the EVMS community to creatively apply their talents to improve the experience of our learners.
 
Nominating statement should provide details, not to exceed two pages (if in excess of, only pages 1-2 will be reviewed), describing the nominee's contribution, using Glassick's criteria for scholarly work as a guide:
  • Clear goals
  • Adequate preparation
  • Appropriate methods
  • Significant results
  • Effective presentation

AWARD FOR EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP (QTY. 1)

This award acknowledges and celebrates exemplary leadership at various levels of seniority that has a significant and positive impact on advancing the educational experience of our learners. This award will be given to a faculty member who demonstrates a record of significant leadership which matches or exceeds the record presented in the standard-setting examples. Examples include serving as director of a module, course, program, or clerkship; chairing or serving on an education-related committee; leading an Academy of Educators work team or helping with the development of the Academy; or receiving an educational-related grant that supports training or programs.
 
Nominating statement should provide details, not to exceed two pages (if in excess of, only pages 1-2 will be reviewed), of one of the most significant/best achievements in educational leadership using the following criteria as a guide:
  • Title of the project
  • Year implemented
  • Describe the need, problem or opportunity
  • Rationale for change or innovation
  • Goals
  • Leadership role(s)
  • Specific contribution or impact
  • Target audience
  • Connection to prior work, literature and best practices

AWARD FOR EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP (QTY. 1)

The Educational Scholarship Award is designed primarily for the faculty member who has examples of educational scholarship work which are broadly disseminated. We seek to define scholarship broadly. According to Boyers Model of Scholarship it can include:
  • Scholarship of Discovery: This research contributes to the knowledge and the intellectual climate, and focuses not only on outcomes but the process.
  • Scholarship of Integration: Work which makes connections across disciplines, seeks to interpret, draw together, and bring new insight to bear on original research.
  • Scholarship of Application: Considers how scholarly investigation and knowledge can be applied to identify problems/issues. 
  • Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: Link between educational theory and knowledge and application to teaching practice. For example, teaching which stimulates active learning and encourages critical, creative thinking. 

Nominating statement should provide details, not to exceed two pages (if in excess of, only pages 1-2 will be reviewed), of a best representation of educational scholarship using the following criteria as a guide:

  • Title of study/project
  • Purpose
  • Preparation (e.g., links with prior work, best practices or literature)
  • Problem, issue or opportunity
  • Research design
  • Results/outcomes/impact
  • Impact value to the institution
  • Nominee's role

Award Selection Committee

The 2023 Faculty Award Selection Committee, comprised of previous award recipients and other EVMS and EVMS Medical Group employees, will evaluate the nominations of eligible nominees and select the 2023 recipients. The Faculty Award Selection Committee, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to determine that an award not be bestowed in a given year. This might occur if there are no nominations submitted in an award category, or if it is determined that the nominations submitted in an award category do not meet the award's criteria or eligibility requirements.
