You're right! We're jelly.

In 1994, research scientist Dorothy Spangenberg, PhD, worked with NASA to send 20,000 microscopic jellyfish into orbit around Earth. The experiment sought to determine if the fast-growing jellyfish "polyps" could develop normally in the microgravity of space. The results may have implications for humans if and when children are born in space in the future.

Though rare diseases affect just a small part of the population, Alison Boyce, MD (MD '06), says researching them can lead to advances in medical science that will benefit everyone.

Class notes

Fuad Bohsali, MD: (MD'13), is currently a hospitalist fellow at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center He is currently doing research work in quality improvement, as well as taking coursework in the school of public health. He presented clinical vignettes at the American College of Physicians (ACP) National Conference in 2015, as well as at the ACP regional conference in 2016.
Jennifer Eldridge, MD: (Biomedical Sciences '08, MD '12), joined Lancaster General Health Physicians Family and Maternity Medicine in Lancaster, Penn. She completed her internship at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and most recently completed her residency there.
Mary Maniscalco-Theberge, MD: (MD '81), was awarded the inaugural American College of Surgeons (ACS) Mary Edwards Walker Inspiring Women in Surgery Award. She was recognized for her work as a champion for the advancement of women in surgery and for being an inspiration throughout her career to female surgeons in the Washington, DC, area.
Jonathan Philpott, MD: (MD '94), co-authored the textbook, Surgical Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation: A Comprehensive Guide to Performing the Cox Maze IV Procedure.

White Coat Ceremony

Members of the Physician Assistant Class of 2019 officially received their white coats in a ceremony held at the Harrison Opera House, Friday, Jan. 6, 2017.

Breakfast of champions

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner spoke at EVMS in November during a Community Leaders Breakfast. The event enabled business leaders from around the region to learn more about the institution, tour the Sentara Center for Simulation and Immersive Learning at EVMS and even have a chance to talk with Sen. Warner.

Super heroes

Spiderman faced off with Elias Siraj, MD, the David L. Bernd Distinguished Chair for Cardiovascular and Diabetes, Professor of Internal Medicine and Chief of Endocrinology and Metabolic Disorders at EVMS, to raise awareness of diabetes at a recent Norfolk Admirals hockey game.

Tacky Sweater 5K

EVMS Dermatology residents and staff, as well as other EVMS staff, students, friends and family participated in the Tacky Sweater 5k in December to promote melanoma awareness and sun safety. Mettle Events selected EVMS as a race beneficiary.

Badge of honor

Orientation for the Physician Assistant Class of 2019 was held the first week of January. In total, 84 students joined the class and received their identification badges, welcome packets and other new-to-campus goodies.

A year in review
