The Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) received federal funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration to operate the Eastern Virginia-Area Health Education Center (EV-AHEC) as the regional center affiliated with the Virginia Statewide AHEC Program from 1979 through August 2022. Effective September 2022 the federal funding for the EV-AHEC has transitioned to Norfolk State University (NSU) as part of the Center for Public Health Initiatives at NSU. While no longer receiving federal funds expressly for this purpose, EVMS remains committed to responding to health workforce shortages and health disparities in the Hampton Roads region through its innovative programs.
