About the conference

The annual Graduate Student Research Conference (GSRC) is run by the EVMS Biomedical Sciences Student Organization (BSSO).

Grad research conference

Now in its 12th year, this conference showcases the basic sciences from research graduate students from across Virginia.

We are excited to once again host an open conference with graduate students and post docs invited to share their research

Jonathan Baker, President

Hello, my name is Jonathan Baker. Originally from upstate New York, I’ve spent the majority of my life in rural Northern Virginia and now live in Norfolk, Virginia. I received my bachelor’s degree in biology in 2017 from the University of Virginia, was awarded a cancer research training award for 3 ½ Years at the National Institutes of Health, and have spent the last 3 years in research labs at EVMS.

I am now a 3rd year PhD candidate in the lab of Dr. Amy Tang, researching late-stage, drug/chemo-resistant, RAS-driven cancers, and the role of a novel, downstream gatekeeper protein, Seven-in absentia homolog, that can shut down tumor growth and eradicate cancer.

Zachary Luyo, Vice President

Hello, everyone! My name is Zachary Luyo. I am 23 years old and live in Suffolk, Virginia. I received my Associate’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2018 from Liberty University, followed by my Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience in 2022 from Christopher Newport University.

I transitioned directly from undergrad to the Ph.D. program here at EVMS, where I work as a 2nd year Ph.D. student in the Sleep Lab of Drs. Sanford and Wellman. Our research investigates the impact of various stressors on behavior, gene expression, and brain morphology, and how sleep can mediate these processes.
