Requirements to consider when applying

Virginia Medical License requirements

Trainees are provided the required temporary license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Social Security

Federal Social Security Tax is deducted from the trainee’s stipend check. International medical graduates should contact Human Resources for clarification of the status of this requirement.

Health requirement

All incoming trainees are required to complete a number of pre-employment health requirements (including, but not limited to, a physical, drug screening and TB screening). Please review the health requirements for incoming trainees for more details.

Promotion

Promotion to the next level of training and the corresponding reappointment of the current contract are dependent on the successful completion of the requirements and expectations of the current post-graduate year, including knowledge, skills and professional development. Decisions on annual reappointment are made by the program director in conjunction with the program’s graduate medical education committee and based on quality of performance and conduct.

Exceptions to this procedure include residents who are released from the program, performance which is below expected academic and/or personal standards, lack of completion of current-year requirements, participation in a one-year program and/or voluntary resignation.

Additional certifications/requirements

If required by programs, trainees must be certified in Basic Life Support and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support. For information on other program specific requirements, applicants should contact the program director.

International applicants

EVMS sponsors J-1 visas for trainees in several programs; however, each program's requirements differ for foreign medical graduates. Visit residencies and fellowships for specific information.
