  • Describe the three roles of a supervisor in the discrimination model of supervision

Graduate Certificates & Post Masters

The Graduate Art Therapy and Counseling Program also offers the following three stand-alone Graduate Certificates. These certificates target continuing education for alumni and area art therapists based on coursework to meet continuing education standards, fill gaps in education, and engage in the developing literature in the field. 

Graduate Certificate in Trauma & Neuroscience Informed Therapy (classes begin Summer 2023)

Course Requirements:

  • ATC 705: Trauma & Neuroscience Informed Therapy (3 credits)
    This course will review and engage students in the current literature of Trauma Informed Practices, neuroscience as it applies to trauma work in art psychotherapy and counseling, and resources of trauma informed care(assessments, workbooks, & practices). The objective is for the student to build skills and understanding trauma, understand the etiology of behaviors, emotions, and functioning related to trauma, and develop treatment plans based in practice. 
          

Graduate Certificate in Advanced Cultural Humility (classes begin Fall 2023)

Course Requirements:

  • ATC 659: Cultural Humility (3 credits)
    This course supports the development of culturally humble art therapists and counselors through multicultural orientation with regard to intersecting identities including age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, nationality, socio-economic status, developmental ability, physical ability, education, family values, and religious and spiritual values. Through review of the current literature, application to clinical practice, and self-assessment, students will explore culture and their own unintentional biases, develop strategies for working with diverse individuals, groups, and communities, foster critical thinking skills, and explore the role of the art therapist in culturally alert and responsive practices for art therapy, social justice, and advocacy. 
  • ATC 701/702: Applied Cultural Sensitivity in Art Psychotherapy & Counseling (4 credits)(Study Abroad)
    This course will engage students in cultural immersion to learn about cultural similarities and differences in art, the arts, and art psychotherapy, and varied aspects of the impacts of trauma (war trauma, trauma experiences of families, combat trauma, survivors of sex trafficking, and historical trauma). Students will engage in content and experientials that explore art expression, role of art, artists, therapists, and art therapists in society, art/crafts processes, preferences or prohibitions to various art processes or media, and conventional/cultural symbolism; cultural appropriation in art therapy; and cultural sensitivity to the use of art processes and materials in art therapy for trauma informed approaches integrated into art psychotherapy and counseling in various community settings.

 

Graduate Certificate in Trauma & Neuroscience Informed Art Psychotherapy (classes begin Fall 2023) 

Course Requirements:

  • ATC 687: Trauma & Neuroscience Informed Art Therapy & Counseling (3 credits)
    This course will review and engage students in the current literature of Trauma and Neuroscience Informed Counseling & Art Psychotherapy Practices and additional materials. The objective is for the student to build skills and understanding how to treat survivors of trauma, understand the etiology of behaviors, emotions, and functioning related to trauma, and develop age-appropriate treatment plans based in best art therapy practice. In addition, students will develop an understanding of brain based science and neuro informed practices in counseling and art psychotherapy. 

 

Educational Format

Classes are taught online or on campus in either the fall, spring or summer term. There may be unforeseen circumstances such as low registration numbers where on campus delivery mode sections will be moved into an online delivery mode section.

Tuition will be based on our current per credit hour rate.

The Art Therapy and Counseling Program has been approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) as an approved continuing education provider, ACEP No. 6399.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Post Master of Science in Art Therapy Program is offered to applicants who currently have a Master's Degree in a related mental health field (minimum 48 semester units or 72 quarter units) from an accredited institution in the United States or equivalent academic preparation outside of the U.S. --Related Master's degrees include: counseling, social work, psychology, psychiatric nursing, other mental health professions and expressive or creative art therapies. Related degrees not tied to licensure include the fine arts, art education, and special education. Other related degrees may be considered with approval from the Program Director.

CURRICULUM

The three-year, 30 credit hour Art Therapy Program offers a hybrid model of art therapy education in a recommended sequence of course study.  Students are prepared with foundational course work focused on the history, theory, and practice of art therapy.  Once foundational coursework has been completed, students complete the written and oral comprehensive examination.  In the third year, students begin working on their capstone projects.

 

Students are required to complete all of the following graduation requirements:

  • Coursework complete with a 3.0 (B) average or above,
  • Capstone Project,
  • Meets technical standards and expectations on the Professional Performance Review,
  • Practicum/Internship

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

After foundational coursework has been completed students begin Practicum and Internship experiences.  Students complete internships in child, adolescent, and adult populations with no less than 25 hours of direct client contact, and 25 hours of non-direct client contact in each population and not more than 300 hours of direct client contact and not more than 300 hours of non-direct client contact in any one population.

  • Qualifying GPA (3.00 or better)
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Bachelor’s Degree completed
  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Science or related field completed
  • All prerequisite coursework satisfactorily completed
  • Official transcript(s) for any outstanding prerequisites and/or proof of enrollment

APPLICATION PROCESS

The following elements MUST be completed BEFORE an invitation to interview can be granted to the applicant:

  • Complete and submit the online application along with the application fee. Applicants are encouraged to apply by February 15th
  • Two references from individuals who are acquainted with you academically, personally, and/or professionally. References from close friends and family members are unacceptable.
  • Submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended.

TUITION AND FEES

The tuition and fee rates for the Graduate Art Therapy Program at EVMS are announced prior to the start of each academic year and are subject to change without notice. Tuition is the current per credit hour rate for the academic year.  Questions about tuition and fee charges on student accounts should be directed to Financial Services. Students may apply for financial aid.
