EVMS learning technology

EVMS Online uses various educational technologies to provide the best possible learning environment for its students. We take the time to evaluate the technology we use for reliability, effectiveness, and ease of use. Most of the Educational tools that are chosen integrate directly with our Blackboard system, reducing the need for additional login credentials and putting the power of the tools directly in our courses.

Blackboard

Blackboard is the learning management system of choice for EVMS. Blackboard is committed to adapting to and staying ahead of the evolving landscape of education and so are we. As an online learner, you will be required to use this system throughout your time here. All of your course work will be available to you on Blackboard. It allows us to learn and teach anytime and anywhere. Blackboard is a fully responsive platform designed for all devices with mobile apps to support critical workflows such as assignment submission, grading, and collaboration.

Blackboard Ally

Blackboard Ally helps EVMS build a more inclusive learning environment by helping us control course content assessing usability, accessibility, and quality. This tool improves the overall student experience by automatically creating alternative formats for course content that provide students with the added flexibility that comes with a more personalized approach.

Media and web conferencing tools

Panopto

Panopto allows EVMS to centrally manage recorded lectures, videos, presentations, and other media assets in a secure, searchable video platform that is integrated with Blackboard. It helps EVMS achieve compliance with accessibility requirements with captioning options, screen reader support, and more.

Blackboard Collaborate Ultra

Collaborate Ultra is a simple, convenient, and reliable web conferencing solution that is built for education and integrated directly in the Blackboard learning management system. With Collaborate, you can engage with materials, peers, and instructors! Thanks to the robust collaboration and conference tools, everyone feels like they're in the same room together, no matter the device.

VoiceThread

VoiceThread is a significant enhancement over the traditional textbased discussion board used in many online learning courses. Upload, share, and discuss over 50 different types of media. Comment on VoiceThread slides using one of five powerful commenting options: microphone, webcam, text, phone, and audio-file upload.

Test taking tools

There are various test-taking tools available at EVMS which are selected by your program and instructor. You will receive instructions in your courses specific to test-taking needs.

Blackboard Tests and Surveys

Instructors use tests to assess your mastery of course objectives. Most traditional tests and quizzes will be delivered using Blackboard. After you submit your test you will be able to view your grades when your instructor makes them available to you. Instructors can use anonymous surveys for polling purposes and evaluations. Surveys aren't graded, but they do appear as complete or incomplete.

Respondus Lockdown Browser

In an effort to ensure integrity during tests some faculty will use the Blackboard testing tools in conjunction with Respondus Lockdown Browser or Respondus Monitor. These tools prevent learners from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during a test. Instructions for first-time users are provided at your fingertips in every course!

Student Disability Services

EVMS Student Disability Services is dedicated to helping students with disabilities reach their full potential by providing access to reasonable academic and clinical accommodations. To guarantee timely delivery of accommodations, students who have a history of the need for accommodations should contact Student Disability Services once they have received notification of acceptance into their academic program of choice. New or Current students that do not have a history of accommodations, but are having academic difficulty and suspect that a disability may be present should also contact the Office of Student Disability Services.

EVMS Academic Development provides resources, programs, and services for students that advance academic skills and support personal success. The office helps students balance the demands of academics, research, clinical activities, personal life commitments, and service to their community through:

Academic Counseling, which helps learners in the EVMS community acquire more effective and efficient academic skills.
Content-specific peer tutoring coordinated through Academic Development with authorization by the course director.
