Teaching and providing quality care
We are committed to teaching the next generation of skilled dermatologists. Faculty lecture at national conferences, conduct research and publish annually in scholarly journals.
Our faculty and staff provide care for our nation’s veterans and underserved patient populations in a variety of settings. Students, residents and physician assistants benefit from their expertise in a broad range of skin, hair and nail disorders.
Our residency
Foster your skills as an expert dermatologist in an accredited three-year program. Our graduates are prepared to practice dermatology or enter a specialty fellowship program. Our rigorous curriculum covers:

Grants and research
Members of EVMS Dermatology actively collaborate with investigators at EVMS, the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Old Dominion University to answer questions about the biology of the skin and process of diagnosis. Clinical trials are conducted under the direction of Dr. Abby Van Voorhees with specific areas of research in psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. Dr. Edward Prodanovic oversees research involving cutaneous cancers.
Meet the faculty

Abby Van Voorhees, MD
As Professor and Chair of Dermatology, Dr. Van Voorhees specializes in caring for patients with psoriasis and eczema.
Dr. Van Voorhees has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and has co-authored three books. Currently, Dr. Van Voorhees is on the board of directors at the American Academy of Dermatology. She is also the first female Chair of the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) medical board and has been a member of their board of directors.

Alice Roberts, MD, PhD
Dr. Roberts is an assistant professor of dermatology. She earned her medical degree at the University of Rochester. After completing her residency at UCLA School of Medicine, she went on to complete two fellowships there, one in surgical pathology and the other in dermatopathology. Dr. Roberts specializes in dermatopathology.

Robert J. Smith, MD
Dr. Smith is an assistant professor of dermatology. He graduated from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA. He served his residency at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA; and completed an internship at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, PA. He is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology.
