EVMS Radiology has an ACGME accredited Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) track and is able to accommodate one diagnostic radiology resident per year who identifies an early desire to enter into Interventional Radiology (IR) and shows the aptitude and credentials to be chosen for this training track in the second year of residency.
Our IR section is staffed by five fellowship-trained interventional radiologists, a fellowship-trained neurointerventional (NIR) radiologist, and full complement of physician’s assistants, dedicated IR nurses and technologists.
In a new interventional suite of procedure rooms including CT-fluoroscopy and biplane capabilities, our program offers a broad spectrum of services such as interventional oncology (TACE, Y-90, microwave and cryoablations), biliary interventions and TIPS, genitourinary interventions including uterine artery embolization, thrombectomy/thrombolysis, spine interventions, treatment of GI bleeding, solid organ and pelvic trauma interventions at our Level 1 trauma center.
The ACGME-accredited ESIR training requires residents to rotate in 12 IR and IR-related rotations (including ICU) during PGY 4 and 5 with documentation of required number of procedures. Completing the prescribed ESIR training and satisfying IR procedural requirements allows these residents to apply for second year Independent IR Residency.
In addition to DR rotations, the schedule for ESIR resident includes a four-week block in PGY3 year, one to two four-week blocks in PGY 4 year, and an intensive PGY 5 including seven core blocks, neurointerventional radiology, vascular surgery, ICU, IR clinic, other IR-related blocks and elective opportunities.
