L.D. Britt, MD, MPH, FACS, FCCM
Dr. Britt has received numerous distinctions for teaching and community service, including the AAMC’s Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award and the Association of Surgical Education’s Distinguished Educator Award for lifetime achievement, and has served in leadership roles, such as president and chair, of more than 10 surgical societies and associations, including the ACGME Residency Review Committee for Surgery. In 2016, he was elected to the National Academy of Medicine, and in 2017, he received a $2.5 million NIH grant to address healthcare disparities.

Dr. Britt (MD ’98, Surgery Residency ’04) is the Robert L. Payne Chair in Surgery and the EVMS-Sentara Endowed Chair for Academic Leadership Advancement. She is board-certified in surgery and surgical critical care. Dr. Britt specializes in advanced laparoscopic, general abdominal, acute care and breast surgery. She helped develop the Acute Care Surgery service line at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Coastal Virginia Magazine recognized Dr. Britt as a "Top Doc" in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Dr. Hughes, Associate Professor of Surgery, leads EVMS' Surgical Oncology division as its chief. While working at the National Institutes of Health's National Cancer Institute, she served as principal investigator for clinical trials on cancer-related protocols and redeveloped the curriculum for the NIH's Surgical Oncology Research Fellowship. In between publishing in journals and books, serving as a reviewer for journals and presenting nationally and internationally on surgical oncology topics, Dr. Hughes serves as a mentor to medical students, residents and fellows in surgical oncology.
