EVMS General Surgery's surgeons are certified by the American Board of Surgery and have extensive expertise in treating diseases of the abdomen, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach, colon, anorectal and endocrine organs. Patients diagnosed with adrenal problems, parathyroid and thyroid diseases are also treated surgically.
Medical students shadow and residents and fellows train with our faculty on acute care surgery procedures.
Minimally invasive surgery
Today, many surgical procedures are performed using minimally invasive techniques versus traditional open procedures with large incisions. For patients where a less invasive procedure is an option, discomfort is often minimized, and the amount of time spent in the hospital can be reduced with fewer wound complications and risks for infection. Patients usually return to work and/or normal everyday activities sooner.
Common laparoscopic operations performed include inguinal and ventral hernias, cholecystectomy, nissen fundoplication for reflux and heller myotmy for achalasia. Additionally, our surgeons have expertise in solid organ laparoscopic surgery, including adrenal gland and spleen.
