Jump-start a career in academic Emergency Medicine (EM) by learning how to be an excellent and effective teacher. This Fellowship will provide you with all of the tools necessary to become a successful academic Emergency Medicine physician.
Academic Fellows will be integrated into the EVMS EM core faculty and function as junior faculty members. Fellows will assist in educational design, academic teaching, residency interviews, and resident assessment. In addition, Fellows will directly oversee the third-year EVMS medical student clerkship.
Fellows will report directly to the EVMS EM Academic Chairman, Dr. Barry Knapp, who also serves as the Fellowship Director. Dr. Knapp has spent over 25 years in academic teaching including 13 years as an EM Residency Program Director.

The Fellowship curriculum includes attending two outstanding educational courses - the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Teaching Fellowship (11 days) and the Harvard "Principles of Medical Education - Maximizing Your Teaching Skills" (3 days). Course cost are all covered by the academic department. In addition, the Fellow will gain experience in leading simulation classes, small and large group teaching, and classroom didactics.
The Fellow will have the opportunity to develop and maintain high quality emergency medicine clinical and teaching skills by seeing patients primarily and supervising EM residents and medical students in the emergency department of our teaching hospitals. Fellows are required to complete a total of 1,000 hours of scheduled clinical shifts during the academic year.
