Curriculum

The Academic Emergency Medicine (AEM) Fellowship is a one year, non-ACGME accredited fellowship designed for the resident who would like to pursue a career in academic Emergency Medicine, or would simply like to improve and refine their teaching skills.

The Fellowship consists of the following components:

1. Attend the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Teaching Fellowship. This intensive experience involves six days in August and five days in March. The course is taught by outstanding teachers and educators in the field of Emergency Medicine. It also allows and promotes important networking opportunities among attendees. All expenses associated with attending the course are paid for by the Department.
2. Attend the three day “Principles of Medical Education – Maximizing Your Teaching Skills,” sponsored by the Harvard Medical School in the spring. This course is among the highest – rated Harvard Medical School CME courses. All expenses associated with attending the course are paid for by the Department.
3. Attend monthly Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) Graduate Medical Education Council (GMEC) meetings. This meeting involves all of the Program and Fellowship Directors at EVMS and is chaired by the school’s Designated Institutional Official (DIO). Policies and procedures involving graduate medical education, updates from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), interactions with our various teaching hospitals, and other GME issues are discussed at these meetings.
4. Attend monthly departmental faculty meetings. Allows for active engagement in decision making at the academic departmental level.
5. Attend our two Faculty Retreats. One Retreat involves the Annual Program Review, as required by the Residency Review Committee for Emergency Medicine (RRC-EM). Based on this review, changes are made to improve the clinical rotations, curriculum, and other educational components of the residency program. The other Retreat serves as an opportunity to brainstorm and discuss potential enhancements of our academic department.
6. Serve as faculty for our weekly simulation labs for our EM residents, PA Fellows, and medical students, as schedule allows.
7. Present a minimum of three lectures over the academic year at weekly resident conference, attended by EM faculty, residents, fellows, and medical students.
8. Serve as faculty for first and second year EVMS small and large group teaching sessions. For these, the Fellow is paired with a basic science faculty member to provide the clinical aspects and implications of the topic.
9. Meet regularly with the Fellowship Director (Chair), for mentoring and teaching sessions to facilitate a successful academic career.
10. Work with the EVMS Office of Graduate Medical Education to assist with the Chief Resident program, the residents as teachers program, and other institution wide GME educational opportunities.
11. If the Fellow desires, they may take courses eligible for a Master Program Certificate in Education through EVMS. This needs to be finalized prior to the start of the Fellowship.
