What sets us apart?
Fellows are involved with both professional and volunteer EMS organizations, in addition to an air ambulance program and a critical care pediatric transport program. Our fellows also have opportunities to work with Federal agencies including Urban Search and Rescue Teams, and have extensive training opportunities with local Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams.
Our fellows cultivate their own research interests and give back to the medical community through effective teaching of evidence based Emergency Medicine to multi-level learners. Fellows maintain a strong sense of self-directed, autonomous learning.
Fellows will mature their clinical skills in the Emergency Department and practice procedures in the Sentara Center for Simulation and Immersive Learning at EVMS. Each fellow attends state and national meetings to present research and engage in cutting edge prehospital education and practice updates. The fellow will also work extensively at the regional level with Tidewater Emergency Medical Services (TEMS) for protocol development, quality improvement projects, provider teaching, and participation in multijurisdictional oversight.

Fellows rotate with multiple rescue squads and EMS teams in the area, including:
- Children’s Hospital of King’s Daughters Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team
- Norfolk Fire-Rescue
- Portsmouth Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services
- Portsmouth Police Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT)
- Sentara Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance
- Urban Search & Rescue Task Force (VA-TF2)
- Virginia Beach Department of Emergency Medical Services
Emergency Physicians of Tidewater
Emergency Physicians of Tidewater (EPT) is a democratic physician-owned group that exclusively staffs the Emergency Department at Sentara Hospitals Southside, where the EMS Fellow will do their clinical shifts. Fellows will work part time as attending physicians with the group, which staffs 5 hospitals and 2 freestanding EDs in the Sentara system. EPT is also the supervisory group for the EVMS EM residency program, and fellows will have ample opportunities to hone their medical and teaching skills.
Fellows will practice Emergency Medicine clinically with multiple Sentara Emergency Departments in Hampton Roads. This includes Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the primary teaching hospital for EVMS, home to the area’s only Level I trauma center and burn unit as well as the region’s premier heart program.

Wellness in Emergency Medicine
Our commitment to wellness doesn't stop with EVMS' Wellness Works and GME's Resident Wellness programs for all residents and fellows. Emergency Medicine provides added support for trainees through our departmental Wellness and Resilience Committee.
