You may choose either a one- or two-year track for this fellowship.
One-year fellowship
- Three to four months of overseas medical experience
- 1,000 hours of clinical work in the Emergency Department

Two-year fellowship
- Five to six months of overseas medical experience
- 1,000 hours of clinical work in the Emergency Department each year
- Master of Public Health (MPH) degree

GEM Fellowship curriculum will be designed to focus primarily on overseas medical mission work for those who choose to pursue the MPH degree.
Fellows will be required to successfully complete the mandatory curriculum requirements provided in their fellowship guide. They will also attend a conference on Tropical Medicine, approved by the Fellowship Director.
A research project in an area of interest to the fellow, with the expectation of publication, is required for successful completion of the fellowship. EVMS Emergency Medicine has access to research assistants and statistical support to assist fellows. Fellows are strongly encouraged to determine their research interest and focus prior to starting the program.
Fellows are encouraged to attend weekly Emergency Medicine Grand Rounds conferences and monthly EM Journal Club. Each fellow is expected to present one GEM-themed Journal Club or a lecture for the EM residency program annually.
The faculty of EVMS Emergency Medicine have diverse and extensive experience and skills with expertise in:
- EM Ultrasound
- Emergency Medical Services
- Hyperbaric and Undersea Medicine
- Tactical Medicine
- International and Domestic Disaster Response
Faculty members have expertise in leadership through active roles in the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), Virginia ACEP and the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM).
Fellows will work clinically as employees of Emergency Physicians of Tidewater (EPT), a private practice group that serves as faculty for EVMS Emergency Medicine. Practice opportunities within EPT will serve to broaden the fellow's clinical judgment and experience. We provide the coverage for seven emergency departments (five hospital-based and two freestanding) in the Hampton Roads area (Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Suffolk).
Fellows will have the opportunity to supervise EM residents and off-service residents in the ED and receive an EVMS faculty appointment at the Instructor level.
The fellowship begins July 1 and will run for 12 or 24 months, depending on the selected track.
