The Emergency Medicine elective is open to fourth-year EVMS and visiting medical students. EVMS has designated this rotation as meeting an acting internship requirement. During this rotation, students work one-on-one in the emergency department with emergency medicine residents and faculty. The rotation is broken down into four-week blocks that correspond with the EVMS academic year.
Student rotation experience
Clinical
- 15 clinical shifts in the emergency department (eight-and nine-hour shifts)
- Experience in order entry for labs and imaging in our electronic medical record (EPIC)
- Experience in completing patient care notes in EPIC
Academic
- Attend weekly Grand Rounds
- Attend the monthly student Clinical Case Conference proctored by a faculty member
- Students will present an actual case they managed in the emergency department
- Attend a proctored ultrasound session in our ultrasound lab
- Attend at least one faculty-proctored resident simulation session
- Take the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) Emergency Medicine exam upon completion of the rotation
- Attend monthly Journal Club
- Includes a free meal at a local restaurant
Standard letter of evaluation
Upon completion of the Emergency Medicine elective, students pursuing a career in emergency medicine may request a standard letter of evaluation (SLOE), which will be written by the Emergency Medicine Clerkship Director/Program Director and uploaded to the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
Schedules
Student schedules are prepared by the EVMS Emergency Medicine Chief Resident. Student schedules mimic our resident schedules, which include days, evenings, nights and weekends.

- Sentara BelleHarbour (Freestanding ED)
- Sentara Independence (Freestanding ED)
- Sentara Leigh (Hospital ED)
- Sentara Norfolk General (Level 1 trauma center, hospital ED)
- Sentara Obici (Hospital ED)
- Sentara Princess Anne (Hospital ED)
- Sentara Virginia Beach General (Hospital ED)
Visiting student application process
At this time, EVMS only accepts student enrolled in a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)-accredited medical school in the United States. Any rotating medical student must be in good academic standing at their current school.

URM Scholarship for EM Clerkship
The Department of Emergency Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) is excited to offer a scholarship for a visiting underrepresented minority student. The department will provide a stipend up to $1500 against receipts related to registration, travel, lodging, meals, and other necessary expenses associated with completing our four-week Emergency Medicine elective rotation.
This scholarship is for rising 4th year medical students who are committed to pursuing a career in emergency medicine and completing an EM elective rotation at EVMS.
Eligibility requirements:
- Will be a senior medical student in good standing at an accredited U.S. medical school
- Meet EVMS requirements for acceptance into the EVMS EM Clerkship
- Member of a traditionally underrepresented racial/ethnic minority group (e.g., American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, or Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander)
- Letter of recommendation from a faculty member who can attest to the applicant’s interest in EM.
