George R. Saade, MD

Dr. Saade is Professor and Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Associate Dean for Women's Health. He joined EVMS in February 2023.

Dr. Saade graduated from the International College in Beirut, Lebanon, and went on to study at the University of Tennessee School of Engineering, Knoxville, Tennessee. He returned to Lebanon where he earned his medical degree at the American University of Beirut Medical School, Beirut, Lebanon. He then joined the Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland, where he completed his obstetrics and gynecology residency, followed by a Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas.

Prior to joining EVMS, he served as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Cell Biology, holder of the Jennie Sealy Smith Distinguished Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Director of the Maternal Fetal Medicine Division, Chief of Obstetrics and Director of Perinatal Research Division, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), Galveston, Texas. He also founded the Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship program at UTMB and was the program director for several years.

He has been involved in all aspects of research, with a long track record in multicenter collaborative clinical and translational research, as evidenced by the fact he has been the PI on the NICHD-MFMU Network for the past 3 cycles, a co-PI of the Genomic Proteomic Network and a PI of the NICHD Stillbirth Collaborative Research Network. He is also the chair of the steering committee for the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-Be (nuMoM2b) and its follow up studies the nuMom2b Heart Health Study 1 and 2.

Dr. Saade has held national and international leadership positions in professional societies, including president of the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine and chair of its Health Policy and Advocacy Committee. He also chaired several standing and ad hoc NIH study sections and had been a reviewer for NIH, CDC, and other international funding agencies. He received the Duane Alexander Award from NICHD, which specifically recognizes mentorship and leadership in neonatology and perinatology. His expertise has been recognized by being asked to serve as a member of the National Advisory Council for NICHD.

He has received numerous awards including the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine. He has served on several editorial boards, including the American Journal of Perinatology where he is currently the Editor in Chief. He has received numerous research grants, has been a reviewer for 49 journals and societies, and published over 600 peer-reviewed articles and 26 book chapters.
