Course Location: Sentara Norfolk General Hospital

Course Description:

Career exploration on busy inpatient consultative general cardiology and cardiac subspecialty services. Course includes exposure to cardiac echo, transesophageal echo, stress testing, and nuclear imaging as well as elective and emergent interventional cardiology, cardiac electrophysiology, structural heart, and advanced heart failure, and cardiac transplant evaluations and procedures. Focus is on seeing both the breath and depth of cardiovascular disease and the cardiologist’s role leading care management. Participate in clinical assessment, decision making, and acute care management of patients with a wide range of cardiovascular pathology.

Learning Objectives:

Observational exposure to 1) wide range of cardiovascular pathology
and 2) a day in the life of cardiologists.

Course Format:

EVMS M3. No formal student evaluation. Two week inpatient elective. No
night call or weekends. Anticipate rounding with a different cardiologist most days to provide a
range of pathologies and experiences.

Course Description:

Busy consultative cardiology service. Course includes exposure to cardiac echo, transesophageal echo, stress testing, and nuclear imaging as well as emergent interventional cardiology procedures and device (pacemaker and defibrillator) implantation. Focus is on clinical assessment, decision making, and acute care management of patients with
a wide range of cardiovascular problems including acute coronary syndromes, rhythm disorders, valvular heart diseases, and cardiogenic shock.

Learning Objectives:

1) Perform a targeted cardiovascular history and exam including pertinent negative and positive findings.
2) Develop a cardiovascular differential diagnosis and plan;
3) Appropriate use of lab, non-invasive, and invasive testing including study limitations;
4) Cardiac invasive hemodynamics associated with heart failure, shock, and other cardiovascular conditions and how they correlate with exam findings;
5) Basic pharmacology of intravenous and oral medications employed for acute and chronic cardiac conditions.

Course Format: EVMS M4. Four week inpatient elective. Perform consultations and follow up rounds, observe procedures. One on one patient presentations and topic discussions with multiple attending physicians. No night call or weekends.
