Internal Medicine Resident Rotations

Course Description:
Busy consultative cardiology service. Course includes participating in evaluation of cardiac echo, transesophageal echo, stress testing, and nuclear imaging as well
as elective and emergent intervention cardiology, cardiac electrophysiology, and structure heart evaluations and procedures. Focus is on higher level clinical assessment, decision making, and acute care management of patients with a wide range of cardiovascular problems including acute coronary artery disease, rhythm disorders, valvular heart disease, and cardiogenic shock.
Learning Objectives:
1) Perform a targeted cardiovascular history and exam including pertinent negative and positive findings;
2) Develop a cardiovascular differential diagnosis and assessment directed plan;
3) Appropriate use of lab, non-invasive, and invasive testing including study limitations;
4) Cardiac invasive hemodynamics associated with heart failure, shock, and other cardiovascular conditions and how they correlate with exam findings;
5) Basic pharmacology of intravenous and oral medications employed for shock, acute coronary syndromes, chronic coronary artery disease including lipid management, acute and chronic dysrhythmias, and acute and chronic heart failure.
Rotation Format: IM PGY1(2). Four week inpatient rotation. Perform consultations and follow up rounds, observe procedures. One on one patient presentations and topic discussions with multiple attending physicians. No night call or weekends.

Course Description:
Predominantly outpatient rotation. Some inpatient consultation. Daily outpatient cardiology clinic, ECG and Transthoracic Echo reading. Participate in stress testing, cardioversion and observe transesophageal echo. Potential transthoracic echo performance.
Learning Objectives:
1) Understand interplay of acute and chronic cardiac conditions in complex older patients in outpatient and community hospital inpatient settings
2) Perform a focused cardiac history and physical
3) Understand outpatient and community hospital inpatient management of coronary disease, heart failure, hypertension, and atrial fibrillation
4) Develop standard approach to echo reading; 5) Enhance ECG reading and stress testing proficiency.
Rotation Format: IM PGY1(2). One week predominantly outpatient rotation. Work directly with staff cardiologist. Staff cardiologist didactic topic presentation(s) and patient based discussion with every patient contact. No night call or weekends.
