Welcome to the EVMS Division of Infectious Diseases!
At the heart of our work is an unwavering commitment to providing excellent medical education and superb patient care. We are dedicated to the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, including HIV /AIDS. Our faculty physicians are experts in travel and tropical medicine, tuberculosis, hospital epidemiology, microbiology, multidrug-resistant infections, and infection control in hospital and community settings. We provide comprehensive care to adults with HIV in settings throughout the area. Our infectious disease faculty and clinical team offer a wide range of services for our patients whether they are hospitalized with a life-threatening infection or need outpatient care to manage a chronic condition.
We are happy to announce that Dr. Jennifer Hanrahan, Division Chief of Infectious Diseases, has joined EVMS as of January 2023. Before joining EVMS, she was Division Chief, Infectious Diseases at the University of Toledo, Toledo Ohio. She is passionate about expanding access to clinical care for infectious diseases, strengthening educational programs for infectious diseases at all levels of training, and encouraging learners to pursue careers in infectious diseases.
Dr. Hanrahan graduated from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed her internal medicine residency and a chief resident year at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. She then completed a fellowship in infectious diseases at the University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. She also earned a Master’s degree in Epidemiology from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Hanrahan was the Medical Director for infection prevention for almost 20 years at MetroHealth Medical Center. She has expertise in outbreak preparedness and has worked with local health departments in Cleveland on bioterrorism/outbreak preparedness. She spearheaded the development of the Special Disease Care Unit at MetroHealth, which became the state-designated Ebola treatment facility.
Dr. Hanrahan took up the position of Division Chief, Infectious Diseases at the University of Toledo in 2019 where she also became the Medical Director for Infection Prevention at ProMedica. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she expanded the University of Toledo Infectious Diseases Consultative Service to provide medical care at numerous regional hospitals that previously did not have access to infectious disease specialists both in-person consultation and through telemedicine.
Dr. Hanrahan is passionate about teaching and medical education and spends a great deal of time educating learners at all levels. She was the Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at the MetroHealth Medical Center. During the COVID pandemic, Dr. Hanrahan helped create a podcast series with the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America called COVID-19 Updates: What We Know Now. She regularly provided updates to healthcare providers during the pandemic on all aspects of COVID.
The Division is engaged in patient care, medical education, and clinical research.
