Our three-year combined fellowship aims to produce outstanding pulmonary and critical care physicians that will meet the needs of the community. Fellows will receive clinical training that encompasses all areas of pulmonary and critical care medicine, including research opportunities. Fellows interested in academic medicine can devote more time to pursuing research endeavors. Fellows interested in clinical medicine will have additional elective time to spend honing their clinical skills and exploring other areas of interest.
Rotations
Fellows will work in a variety of settings including the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Critical Care Unit (CCU) and Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). Fellows can also choose from electives in anesthesia, cardiothoracic surgery, chest radiology, critical care echocardiography, sleep medicine, ENT, palliative care, nephrology and interventional pulmonary medicine.

Procedures
Trainees can expect to become certified in all pulmonary and critical care procedures required by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in all procedures recommended in the Pulmonary and Critical Care Curricular Milestones consensus statement issued by the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Thoracic Society, Society of Critical Care Medicine and Association of Pulmonary and Critical Care Program Directors. These include:
- flexible bronchoscopy
- transbronchial biopsies
- endobronchial biopsies (forceps and needle)
- endobronchial ultrasound
- central venous cannulation
- arterial cannulation
- thoracentesis
- paracentesis
- endotracheal intubation
- tube thoracostomy (chest tube placement and management)
- thoracic ultrasound
Procedures that fellows may have the opportunity to learn, but are not required for graduation, include:
- navigational bronchoscopy
- percutaneous tracheostomy
- renal replacement therapy
- transvenous pacing
- catheter placement
- bronchial thermoplasty
- interventional bronchoscopic procedures
In addition, fellows can participate in GME faculty and resident development training to develop their professional skills and ACGME core competencies.
