How do I apply?
All applications to our residency programs must be submitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We will not accept applications via e mail or fax.
What is your application deadline?
For the upcoming Match season, we will accept applications through November 1st. We will fill all intern positions through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).
What tracks does the EVMS Internal Medicine program offer?
Currently there are three tracks available for applicants. They are:
1. Medicine-Preliminary|2980140P0 (Preliminary)
2. Internal Medicine|2980140C0 (Categorical)
3. Internal Med/Geriatrics|2980140C1 (Categorical)
How many Letters of Recommendation are required?
In addition to the Dean's letter, we require 3 letters of recommendation. A letter from the Department Chair is not required.
What are your USMLE/ COMLEX score requirements?
The Internal Medicine Residency Program does not filter applicants based solely upon a minimum USMLE or COMLEX score. As a point of reference for prospective applicants, the average Step I USMLE and COMLEX scores for our current intern class are 229 and 541 respectively. In addition:
- All steps must be passed on the first attempt
- COMLEX 2 PE and or USMLE Step 2 CK and 2 CS scores must be reported to the program by January 31st
- This requirement applies to both Preliminary and Categorical applicants
- We accept COMLEX scores, but recommend submitting USMLE scores as well
Please note the program maintains the right to review applications on an as-is basis. If your credentials do not meet the stated requirements, this is not an immediate exclusion of your application.
How will I know if I am being considered for an interview?
We review applications on an ongoing basis through November 1st. If you have been selected to interview, you will receive an e mail through ERAS. Due to the volume of applications, we regret that we are unable to provide you with a status report regarding your application.

When are your interviews?
November through January (as-is needed)
How many people do you interview?
We average 6 interviews per day and approximately 150-160 per year.
Do you have an applicant meet and greet?
We offer a dinner with the current residents the evening before all interview dates. This is an opportunity for you and our residents to get to know each other in an informal setting. We consider this an important part of the interview process and will seek feedback on applicants from our current residents.
How long are the interview days?
Our interviews typically follow the schedule below:
7:30a Arrive at Department of Medicine
7:45a Welcome (Program Director or Associate Program Director)
8:00a Morning Report or Grand Rounds
9:15a Overview (Chair/ Vice Chair)
9:45a Chief Resident "Introduction to the Program"
10a-12p One-on-One interviews with faculty (3)
12:00p Lunch with Internal Medicine Residents
12:45p Tour of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (optional)
1:30p End of Day
International Graduates
Do you interview International Medical School Graduates?
We do offer interviews to highly qualified International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who meet the qualifications specified below.
- USMLE scores and letters of recommendation submitted as indicated above
- US Clinical experience (not including observerships) is recommended (ideally 12 months) and strengthens your application.
In order to be ranked by our program, the ECFMG Certificate must be received by January 31st.
Do you have a graduation year cutoff?
We require graduation within 5 years from the day of residency start (July 1st).
Do you sponsor Visas?
EVMS only sponsors J-1 Visas.
How many IMG does your program accept?
The internal medicine program reviews all qualified applicants, regardless of ECFMG/ Visa status.
