AGA names Dr. Johnson a Distinguished Educator

The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), recently honored David A. Johnson, MD, Professor of Internal Medicine and Division Chief of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Division, with the 2016 Distinguished Educator Award. The national honor was bestowed upon Dr. Johnson for his accomplishments over the last 25 years.

“This is truly well deserved,” said Jerry Nadler, MD, Vice Dean for Research, the Harry H. Mansbach Chair in Internal Medicine and Chair of Internal Medicine. “He is an outstanding educator and mentor and we are fortunate to have him as division chief.”

Dr. Johnson is an author, investigator and overall leader in the field of gastroenterology. He has published over 500 articles, book chapters, invited reviews, abstracts in peer-reviewed journals and books, all focused on internal medicine and gastroenterology. He is well-respected for spearheading legislation in Virginia that requires insurers to cover the cost of colon cancer screening. That legislation served as a model for other states. Currently, Dr. Johnson serves on the American Board of Internal Medicine Board of Examiners (gastroenterology) and on numerous journal editorial boards and reviews for 21 medical journals including all of the GI journals. He was a member/reviewer of the National Institutes of Health study section for esophageal/gastric diseases and has provided consultant testimony to the FDA.

According to the AGA press release, Dr. Johnson has “continually fostered the successful careers of the next generation of physicians in the field of gastroenterology. His dedication and compassion as a physician make him an essential role model within the community.”
