EVMS students and faculty spent Saturday, March 31, boosting health awareness and education in the Hampton Roads region by hosting Community Care Day on campus. A student-run event, Community Care Day provided important health screenings, health education and kid-friendly entertainment for more than 200 people.

MD and Health Professions students worked alongside one another in the community outreach event. Health screenings included Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure and skin cancer checks. The Lions Club also partnered with EVMS for the event and provided hearing and sight screenings as well as free glasses to those in need. Other partner organizations included Sentara, Old Dominion University, and the Virginia Department of Health.

Students in the Physician Assistant program used fundraisers to collect more than $3,500 to purchase bicycle helmets and booster seats. Parents lined up at the booth to have their children fitted for the free helmets. Nearby, visitors were able to touch a real brain and see the effects of smoke on lungs.
