Dr. Britt named 2012 Role Model of the Year

L.D. Britt, MD, EVMS Brickhouse Professor and Chair of Surgery, was recently named the 2012 "Role Model of the Year" by the Virginia Peninsula Chapter of the 100 Black Men at their 20th-annual Black Tie Gala.

The group promotes mentorship and academic excellence among youth in Hampton Roads.

A native of Suffolk, Va., and graduate of Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, Dr. Britt is the first African-American to have an endowed chair in surgery in the United States. He also is past president of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Britt serves as a mentor in the community and is involved heavliy in many community outreach projects.

The L.D. Britt, MD, Scholarship Fund at EVMS is one way that Dr. Britt focuses on giving back. The Britt Scholarship aims to inspire, support and encourage talented young people to excel in both medicine and community service. It has become a permanent source of support for promising minority medical students at EVMS.
