EVMS achieves reaccreditation to offer residency training

EVMS has received institutional reaccreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to continue sponsoring accredited residency and sub-specialty fellowship training programs. The decision from the ACGME is for five years, the longest interval possible.

"The ACGME accreditation is important as medical school graduates are required to complete an ACGME accredited residency program in order to take specialty boards," says Linda R. Archer, PhD, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education.

Completion of accredited training is also required by state licensing boards. Without accreditation by the ACGME, EVMS would not be able to provide these residency and sub-specialty fellowship programs.

"This is a testament to the partnership between EVMS and our collaborative graduate medical education hospital partners that provide us the opportunity to the get the maximum allowable institutional accreditation," says Richard V. Homan, MD, Provost and Dean.

Dr. Homan also had praise for the school's "outstanding" residency programs and for Dr. Archer's leadership.

"Dr. Archer has done an outstanding job in terms of ensuring compliance with all the ACGME requirements, which have become more complex over the last several years," he says.

Eastern Virginia Medical School affiliates with four principal teaching hospital systems (Sentara Healthcare, Bon Secours, Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, and Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Hampton) as well as a number of other community sites to provide the clinical venues for training residents and fellows.

EVMS and its hospital and community partners offer training in 14 ACGME accredited residencies as well as 10 ACGME accredited sub-specialty programs. In addition to the institutional accreditation, each of the accredited programs also must undergo periodic accreditation evaluation by the ACGME.
