EVMS clinicians, supporters and alumni honored as “Health Care Heroes”

Twelve people with connections to EVMS — as providers in EVMS Medical Group practices, graduates of the school or supporters from the community — were honored Thursday, Feb. 27, with “Health Care Heroes” awards from Inside Business. Recipients are nominated by the community and selected by a panel of regional health-care experts. Among this year's winners are:
- Health Care Leader: Francis Counselman MD (MD '83), Professor and Chair of EVMS Emergency Medicine and the EVMS Foundation Distinguished Professor in Emergency Medicine
- Volunteer – Individual: Linda Church, who supports EVMS through her involvement with the Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic Foundation's Wine, Women & Fishing fundraiser
- Physician – Surgeon: Barry Strasnick, MD, Professor and Chair of EVMS Otorolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
- Nurse: Kim Moloney, a nurse at EVMS' Strelitz Diabetes Center
- Specialist – Infectious Disease: Edward Oldfield III, MD, Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the EVMS Center for the Comprehensive Care of Immune Deficiency (C3ID)
- Health Care Philanthropy: Macon and Joan Brock, whose support for EVMS made possible the creation of the M. Foscue Brock Institute for Community and Global Health
- Specialist – Hepatology: Mitchell Shiffman, MD, Professor of Internal Medicine
- Physician – Pediatrician Endocrinologist: Marta Satin-Smith, MD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
- Specialist – Dermatology: Fred Quarles, MD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Dermatology
- Specialist – Cardiology: Keith Newby, MD (MD '90), Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine
- Advanced Practice Clinician – Nurse Physician Assistant: Kacie Schappert, MPA (MPA '10)
