The EVMS community lost a talented and highly regarded educator Nov. 17 with the death of Thomas R. Pellegrino, MD, the school's associate dean for education.

A neurologist by training, Dr. Pellegrino held a variety of positions during his 31-year affiliation with Eastern Virginia Medical School. He was the James E. Etheridge Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of Neurology. He also was a beloved teacher.

The faculty at EVMS and friends of Dr. Pellegrino have established an endowed lectureship on ethics in medicine in his name. He was extremely excited about and appreciative of this gesture. Please consider a gift to support the Tom Pellegrino, MD Lectureship. Checks should be made payable to the EVMS Foundation, PO Box 5, Norfolk, VA 23501. Gifts can also be made online.

After learning of his illness earlier this year, EVMS students presented a lengthy tribute to Dr. Pelllegrino, recognizing his skills and accomplishments as a physician, teacher and mentor.

"This is indeed a very sad day for EVMS and for the EVMS community as Tom was so integral to this school and so dedicated to each and every one of us," Provost and Dean Gerald J. Pepe, PhD, wrote in an email to campus.
