Gerald H. Holman, MD, a former Dean of EVMS and the first Chair of the EVMS Department of Pediatrics, died September 19, 2012. He served as the school's second dean, from 1975 to 1979.

"He is credited with helping set the tone for the school's humanistic approach to education, a legacy that continues strong to this day," said EVMS President Harry T. Lester.

EVMS presented him with an honorary degree in 2006 in recognition of his early contributions to the school.

Dr. Holman worked in academic medicine at a variety of institutions during a 48-year career. He was on the forefront of the hospice movement and most recently was Medical Director of Hospice Care of the Southwest in Amarillo, Texas.

He remained a strong advocate for his patients until his death. Just a few weeks ago, at Dr. Holman's urging, the Amarillo Globe-News printed a Sunday edition on light blue newsprint to bring awareness to prostate cancer and the need for regular screenings.

He is survived by his wife Audrey, four children, including 1988 EVMS graduate Mark Holman, MD, a brother and six grandchildren, among other family.
