EVMS' School of Health Professions is launching a Biotechnology Master's degree program designed to prepare graduates to work in biotechnology or pharmaceutical companies or in academic laboratories.

The Biotechnology Master's Program offers a 16-month curriculum that blends classroom lectures with hands-on training courses in several cutting-edge technologies.

The required six-month laboratory internship provides a unique, immersive learning experience — one that teaches students the research techniques and the laboratory-management skills needed to succeed in modern biomedical sciences, biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors.

"It's a well-rounded program. We've been teaching the core of this curriculum as part of our existing programs for several years, and the elements added for the Biotechnology Master's make it a strong training ground for students who want to gain the expertise needed to work with cutting-edge technology in a modern laboratory environment.," says Earl. W. Godfrey, PhD, the new program's Director.

Students work closely with experienced researchers throughout the duration of their coursework, which emphasizes interdisciplinary research and laboratory methods. The rigorous course structure includes molecular and cell biology, imaging techniques, animal models of disease, bioinformatics and lab management. It also exposes students to EVMS' highly regarded proteomics research program, an area of increasing importance in biomedical research.

Admission to the program requires a Bachelor's or graduate degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and college-level courses in biology, chemistry and mathematics.
