New NIH "FORMS-E" Grant Application Forms and Instructions Coming for Due Dates On or After January 25, 2018

Story Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2018 08:02:28 EST

IMPORTANT changes in this year’s NIH guidance:

New NIH "FORMS-E" Grant Application Forms and Instructions Coming for Due Dates On or After January 25, 2018  Notice Number: NOT-OD-17-062

Why are the forms changing?

Agencies periodically update application forms in order to remain current with the most recent form sets available through Grants.gov and approved by the OMB, and to align data collection with current policy.  NIH will require the use of application packages with a Competition ID of “FORM-E” for due dates on or after January 25, 2018.

What is changing in FORMS-E?

  • Consolidation of human subjects, inclusion enrollment, and clinical trial information previously collected across multiple agency forms
  • Expansion and use of discrete form fields for clinical trial information to
  • Provide the level of information needed for peer review;
  • Lead applicants through clinical trial information collection requirements;
  • present key information to reviewers and agency staff in a consistent format; and
  • align with CLinicalTrials.gov (where possible) and position NIH for future data exchange with CLincialTrials.gov
  • Incorporation of recent Grants.gov changes to R&R budget and SBIR/STTR Information forms

How can I tell old application packages from new ones?

Each application package posted in Grants.gov has a “Competition ID”.  This field is used to identify the version of forms and instructions included in the application package.  Application form packages are designated alphabetically to indicate the most recent version (e.g., FORMS-D, FORMS-E).  The Competition Title, which often accompanies the Competition ID, provides additional guidance to help you choose the appropriate application packages (e.g., Use for due dates on or after January 25, 2018).

In ASSIST (NIH grant submission system we are currently using), you will see the Competition ID and Competition Title when initiating your application.  If more than one application package is available, you will be presented with a pop-up window to select the appropriate application package.  After initiation, you will find the Competition ID in the FOA Information found on your Application Summary tab.
