Course description: This elective permits the assumption of greater patient responsibility on the part of the medical student, in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. This elective is recommended if a student is interested in pursuing a residency in OB-GYN and desires more in-depth exposure to the specialty. Our faculty tries to tailor our program to a student’s particular interest, but the basic expectation for this course should be advanced clinical management and reinforcement of cognitive material and problem-solving skills. The student will function as an acting intern.

Objectives:

  1. Increase and reinforce basic core knowledge of Obstetrics and Gynecology as detailed in clerkship objectives
  2. Increase skills in clinical evaluation and management judgments
  3. Increase technical skills in Obstetrics and Gynecology
  4. Gain greater competence in ambulatory care and treatment

Distribution of student’s effort:

  • Patient contact: 70% inpatient, 30% outpatient
  • Rounds: 14 hours per week
  • Conferences and lectures: 7 hours per week
  • Study and reading time: 8 hours per week
  • Faculty contact time: 10 hours per week
