Medical students have the opportunity to select an acting internship in OB-GYN or benign gynecology during their fourth-year. Residents gain experience in general OB-GYN throughout the program.
From nationally sponsored studies to retrospective chart reviews, EVMS Obstetrics and Gynecology is conducting a multitude of active research studies. Current research topics include:
- Depo-Provera injection
- Pre-term births and stillbirths
- Tubal occlusion
- Cervical excision

Managing high-risk pregnancies, the Maternal-Fetal Medicine division's goal is to minimize the risk of specific medical conditions that could affect the mother or baby during pregnancy.
Medical students have the opportunity to select an elective in high-risk obstetrics or reproductive genetics during their fourth-year rotations. Residents rotate with Maternal-Fetal Medicine. There is also a three-year Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship.
Maternal-Fetal Medicine is currently involved in research in fetal echocardiography, abnormal fetal growth, early detection of genetic defects, intrauterine growth restriction, preeclampsia and more.

Medical students, residents and fellows sharpen their surgical skills with the Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery division and the Sentara-EVMS Advanced Gynecologic Surgery Center. The center is a collaborative initiative between Sentara Healthcare and EVMS Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Fourth-year medical students can select an elective in urogynecology. The third-year resident assumes chief-level responsibilities on the urogynecology service.
The Urogynecology division is currently conducting studies in urinary incontinence and prolapse repair.

The Fetal Cardiovascular Center brings together specialists from EVMS Maternal-Fetal Medicine and the neonatology, pediatric cardiology and pediatric cardiovascular surgery department at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD). Specialists at EVMS are renowned for their use of ultrasound technology to diagnose fetal congenital heart disease.
Research support staff assist with the expansion of clinical discovery in the field. Our ongoing research initiatives include:
- Placental structure and function as markers of high-risk pregnancies
- Diabetic pregnancies and fetal cardiovascular abnormalities
- Diagnosis of congenital heart disease in early gestation and more
