EVMS Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) is strongly committed to patient care. We are a team of ten faculty members working with American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)-certified sonographers skilled in fetal echocardiography, genetic counselors, perinatal nurses, advanced practice providers and research coordinators.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine also supports an Accreditaton Council for Graduate Medical Education  (ACGME)-approved MFM fellowship program and a robust infrastructure conducive to clinical research activities.

This one-year Fetal Cardiology fellowship:

  • Provides comprehensive education in fetal cardiology with intense hands-on training in fetal echocardiography.
  • Prepares an MFM physician for a career in academic medicine with significant expertise in the diagnosis and management of pregnancies with cardiovascular abnormalities.

Advanced training in fetal echocardiography includes emerging ultrasound technologies, such as three- and four-dimensional imaging, advanced fetal cardiac function assessment and first-trimester cardiac imaging.

Develop expertise with guidance from skilled investigators. Our fellowship dedicates 12 consecutive months to clinical research.

Gain in-depth knowledge in prenatal diagnosis, fetal echocardiography, Doppler ultrasound and cardiovascular fetal assessment.

During rotations through the fetal cardiology program at EVMS, the trainee will:

  • Gain hands-on experience in transabdominal and transvaginal (early gestation) fetal echocardiography and expertise in the assessment of a broad spectrum of structural and functional fetal heart disease and fetal arrhythmias.
  • Participate and lead in counseling as well as prenatal, perinatal, and neonatal management planning of affected pregnancies.
  • Conduct one of two research initiatives under the direct mentorship of faculty, and present the research at national and/or international scientific conferences.
  • Participate in formal and informal teaching sessions for the MFM fellows and sonographers and lead multidisciplinary meetings that relate to prenatal diagnosis and perinatal/neonatal management planning of pregnancies with complex fetal cardiovascular malformations.

All fellows are expected to participate in at least one research initiative during their year of training.  Fellows will gain experience in generating a research proposal(s) with hypothesis driven objectives, documentation of knowledge gaps in the field, and use of appropriate methodology.

Fellows then present their research outcomes as abstract presentations locally, then at national and/or international scientific conferences, with the goal of their findings appearing in one or more peer-reviewed publications.

All fellows must participate in formal and informal teaching sessions for the MFM fellows and sonographers. Fetal Cardiology fellows will also participate in perinatal, obstetrical, and neonatal teaching sessions that relate to prenatal diagnosis and perinatal/neonatal management planning.
