Radiation Oncology
Our radiation oncologists use the most advanced techniques of delivering therapeutic irradiation for the treatment of malignant disease and some benign conditions. We have our own physics and radiobiology support for patient care and tumor biology research.
Our treatment equipment includes linear accelerators, simulators, and treatment planning computers at all hospital locations. A high-dose-rate remote after loading unit and facilities for intra-operative radiation at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital complement the therapeutic armamentarium.
In addition to standard radiation treatments, our physicians provide the latest treatment, including altered fractionation schemes, interstitial implantation, high-dose remote afterloading by outpatient and inpatient techniques, and intra-operative radiation. The department is involved in institutional multidisciplinary cancer research projects, as well as national protocols.
