Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer remains the third most commonly diagnosed cancer, and the third leading cause of cancer death in both men and women in the US. Statistics show that five percent, or one in 20 Americans, will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer during their lifetimes.

Although colorectal cancer requires surgery in most cases for complete cure, advanced laparoscopic techniques allow for smaller incisions, a shorter hospital stay, and a quicker recovery.

One of the newest modalities offered by EVMS Medical Group surgeons is hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), a treatment that involves filling the abdominal cavity with chemotherapy drugs that have been heated. The procedure is performed in the operating room, after the surgeon removes tumors or lesions from the abdominal area.

The heat makes the chemotherapy drug more effective at killing cancer cells, and also increases blood flow to the area. It's a single treatment, as opposed to traditional chemotherapy, which can require multiple treatments.

It's important to note that because of the high-level of skill of our surgeons, and the surgical techniques they employ, permanent colostomy is required in less than 5 percent of cases.
