The EVMS Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship is committed to train fellows in an environment in which the diversity of backgrounds is valued. Cultural diversity contributes to learning, teaching, clinical care, academic productivity and community. The didactics and clinical experiences intentionally focus on eliminating disparities in health care and addressing structural inequities. The mental health of children, families and communities depends on clinicians standing firm in opposition to hatred and violence, especially as it affects Hampton Roads, which includes racial and ethnic minority children, economically disenfranchised families, LGBTQ youth and parents, immigrants and global refugees.
Fellows are encouraged to play an active role in EVMS:
- Pediatric Residency DEI
- Pediatrics Department IDEAL (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access to Learning) Committee
- CHKD Mental Health Justice, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (JDEI) Committee (at least 1 fellow position)
- Didactics focused on adverse social determinants of health, race and racism in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the needs of specific populations including LGBTQ+, children of color and those involved with the legal system
- Research projects which examine or focus primarily on disparities and needs of patients typically affected by disparities and biases in the community and/or in medicine
