This one- or two- year mentored fellowship offers advanced training in simulation teaching, standardized patient teaching, curriculum design and research at the Sentara Center for Simulation and Immersive Learning (SCSIL) at EVMS.
Fellows will receive instruction in the operation and programming of a variety of medical simulation technologies including:
- High-fidelity human patient simulators
- Partial task simulators
- Computerized simulation technologies
- Virtual reality simulators
- Simulation audio-visuals
- Learning management systems
- Data management systems
Fellows work with a mentor on the concept, design, development, implementation and assessment of simulation and standardized patient programs that will serve participants at multiple levels of training, including medical students, residents, fellows, attending physicians, nurses and allied health professionals. Fellows will develop a portfolio of simulation cases that shall be submitted for evaluation.
Clinical activities
Fellows will receive appointments as clinical instructors at EVMS and work nine clinical shifts per month (20 hours per week). This leaves fellows time to devote to simulation, educational projects and advanced degree coursework. Fellows will spend two days each week at SCSIL working directly with directors.
Teaching activities
Fellows participate in required educational activities offering the fellow opportunities to improve their teaching, presenting and academic skills. Involvement will include resident, fellow and medical student education within Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Fellows will lecture on simulation-related topics at residency and fellowship conferences.
Research activities
Fellows have time to develop and execute research agendas based on personal interests. Fellows are expected to design and implement one original research project or educational program prior to the completion of their training. IRB and manuscript writing support is readily available within Pediatrics.
We sponsor travel to at least one scientific meeting in North America annually, as approved by the fellowship director.

While enrolled, trainees also participate in an advanced degree for two-year fellows or certificate program for one-year fellows. These include:
