- Pediatric Behavioral Medicine (12 months)

Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) is a full-service general pediatric hospital located in the Eastern Virginia Medical Center. It is a freestanding tertiary-care pediatric referral center that also includes a large on-campus ambulatory care center, as well as numerous satellites throughout the region.
Pediatric Behavioral Medicine rotation interns will provide inpatient and outpatient assessment and therapy services. Inpatient training focuses on preparing the intern to work effectively in a diverse medical/hospital culture and to provide brief assessment and short term interventions for patients and their families through the Consultation & Liaison team. Areas of service may include Rehab, GI, Hem/Onc, and Neurology. Outpatient training affords the intern short- and long-term therapy experiences with pediatric patients and families using evidence-based modalities with opportunities to integrate with referral sources such as the PCP, PT/OT/Speech, pediatric specialists, etc. Comprehensive psychological assessment opportunities are available with a wide variety of ages and referral questions.
- Assessment (1-3 per month)
- Administer full psychological batteries with medically and behaviorally complex children and families
- Assessment approaches and instruments include: intellectual, achievement, objective and projective personality, executive functioning, personality, attachment, autism spectrum assessment (e.g., ADOS-2)
- Outpatient Treatment (1-2 days per week)
- Populations served include: chronic medical with co-occurring behavioral and psychological disturbance, medical and other trauma, feeding and eating disorders, conduct problems, gender identity, diverse populations, under-resourced families, military families and others
- Treatment modalities include: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (general and specialized for problems such as feeding and eating disorders, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder), Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, Biofeedback, Structured Psychotherapy
for Adolescents Responding to Chronic Stress (SPARCS) Group Therapy, Family-Based Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa and others - Medical Inpatient and Consultation-Liaison (1-2 days per week)
- Consultation on medically and behaviorally complex cases
- Integrated treatment planning with various healthcare professionals
- Intensive behavioral treatment planning and coordination with care team
- Minor Rotations in Subspecialty Clinics (0.5-1 day per week)
- Sleep Medicine
- Rehabilitation Medicine
- Trauma
- Training and supervision opportunities
- Interns receive more than 3 hours of individual supervision each week from licensed clinical psychologists
- Interns are often part of multiple interdisciplinary group supervision meetings as well that focus on specialty topics (e.g., eating disorders, attachment, inpatient services)
- A variety of serialized and one-off training opportunities are regularly available
