Rotations at Sentara Norfolk General:
- Inpatient Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
- Inpatient Psychiatry Consultation Liaison
Supervisors: Jennifer Flaherty, Ph.D., Sky Ochsner Margolies, Ph.D., and Serina Neumann, Ph.D.
These rotations provide interns training with medical populations. Interns follow referred patients in acute inpatient programs, which are characterized by a relatively short length of stay, a more rapid pace and emphasis on brief assessments and short-term interventions with patients and families in the context of ongoing consultation with the interdisciplinary medical treatment team.
As SNGH is the major teaching hospital for EVMS and a Level I trauma center, the typical rehabilitation diagnostic categories are well-represented, with stroke being the most common. On the inpatient consultation-liaison service, interns are exposed to patients with a variety of medical and psychiatric concerns.
The inpatient training focuses upon the intern's ability to adapt to the medical/hospital culture and to provide the needed diagnostic assessment and therapy services the patient requires. At times, interns are afforded opportunities to conduct support groups and more comprehensive evaluations. Opportunities for conducting additional neuropsychological evaluations with rehabilitation patients are available through the EVMS Neuropsychology division directly adjacent to SNGH.
Through the course of these rotations, interns can participate in ancillary sessions in addition to the six-month weekly seminar in clinical neuropsychology or primary-care psychology. Interns also have the option of attending elective courses in adult and child neuropsychology offered through the local APA-accredited doctoral training program.
Interns on these rotations present for the seminar series for residents and faculty of the EVMS Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Family and Community Medicine or Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and may participate in ongoing research projects within the medical setting.
