Assistant Vice-Provost of Growth and Retention Named
Anca Dobrian, PhD, FAHA, has been appointed to the newly established position of Assistant Vice-Provost of Growth and Retention, effective Sept. 1. Dr. Dobrian will take on this new, part-time role, while continuing her responsibilities as a Professor of Physiological Sciences.
Dr. Dobrian holds a chemical engineering degree from the Polytechnic Institute in Bucharest and a PhD in cell and molecular biology from the Romanian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Cellular Biology and Pathology “Nicolae Simionescu.”
Dr. Dobrian joined EVMS faculty in 2002. In addition to her research and teaching responsibilities, she is the Director of the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Programs since 2019. Her research focus on obesity and co-morbidities has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, Department of Defense and pharma industry. Dr. Dobrian teaches and has developed curricula across graduate and medical education and has extensive mentoring experience with medical students, graduate students and Fellows.
She is inducted Master Educator of the EVMS Fine Academy of Educators. Dr. Dobrian represented EVMS to the Council of Faculty and Academic Societies of the AAMC since 2017 and is appointed member of the Graduate Research Education and Teaching group of AAMC. Dr. Dobrian is part of the EVMS team funded by the ChangeMedEd consortium of the AMA to integrate social determinants of health in the medical curriculum.
In her new position, funded by the strategic plan, Dr. Dobrian will focus on planning, implementing and evaluating opportunities for professional growth and retention of faculty and staff in all mission areas with the ultimate goal to create an inclusive, warm and supportive environment aligned with EVMS’s commitment for excellence, equity and diversity.
Working collaboratively with stakeholders across the institution Dr. Dobrian will identify specific development areas and will design and implement onboarding, mentoring and other formal and informal opportunities for growth and career advancement among junior and senior faculty and employees from diverse backgrounds. She will also evaluate current organizational capacity and identify and develop opportunities for talent growth over time.
Dr. Dobrian is well suited to lead EVMS' institutional growth and retention efforts. Not only does she have the relevant professional experience and knowledge, she has a long demonstrated commitment to promote diversity and inclusion and has the passion for this new role.
