Autism conference focuses on communication
Eastern Virginia Medical School and Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters recently hosted the Seventh Annual Insights into Autism conference at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. This year’s event focused on communication and relationships across the spectrum.
National experts presented on several topics specific to populations with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) including early communication development; the neurobiology of social relationships; relationship building in childhood and the TEACCH approach to working with families in a multicultural context.
The latest figures from the Centers for Disease Control state that 1 in 64 children age 8 has an ASD. It is also four times more likely to occur in boys than in girls.
During the conference, experts and participants discussed key methods for measuring change or improved skills and the benefits of social skills group therapy. They also reviewed possible obstacles families of multicultural backgrounds may experience.
