Brant Cox, MBA, named Interim CEO of EVMS Medical Group
Brant Cox, MBA, has been named Interim Chief Executive Officer of EVMS Medical Group effective Aug. 16. Mr. Cox currently serves in the EVMS President’s Office as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. He will continue in that role as the institution implements its long-term strategy for filling this important position.
“Based on his extensive skills and experience, Mr. Cox has earned the trust and respect of colleagues across campus,” says Richard V. Homan, MD, President and Provost of EVMS and Dean of the School of Medicine. “I am confident he will continue to move the medical group forward during this time of transition.”
Mr. Cox says he is eager for the new challenge. “I am grateful for this opportunity and the chance to lead the medical group team as we build on our history of patient-focused care and continue to provide a high level of support to each other and our community,” he adds.
Mr. Cox, pictured above, left, steps into his new role following the planned retirement in September of the medical group’s current CEO, Kurt Stauder, DPA, MBA, pictured above, right.
Mr. Strauder, a veteran healthcare executive with more than 30 years’ experience at hospitals, hospitals and health systems, joined the medical group in November 2019. During his time at EVMS, he oversaw the practice’s 150 physicians, many of whom are national leaders in their fields. The practice handles more than 415,000 patient visits annually and treats more than 1,600 patients every day at 29 practice locations throughout Hampton Roads.
In 2020, under Mr. Strauder’s leadership, the medical group quickly and safely adapted to challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, including implementing a robust telehealth program, developing clear policies for personal protective equipment and creating an efficient drive-thru testing system.
“We appreciate and thank Dr. Stauder for his contributions as Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Group,” Dr. Homan says. “Leading a medical practice is complex work in any environment. Dr. Stauder provided steady direction during a global health crisis, effectively prioritizing the safety of patients, providers, staff, students and families with every decision he made.”
Mr. Cox already has an established record of success at EVMS.
Prior to his current service of more than eight years in the Office of the President in various capacities including Chief of Staff and Vice President of Operations and his current position, Mr. Cox served as Director of Business Planning and Development in Virginia Tech Administrative and Business Services. He also served more than 13 years in EVMS Obstetrics and Gynecology as Business Manager, Departmental Administrator and Vice Chair of Administration.
Alfred Abuhamad, MD, the Mason C. Andrews Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs and Professor and Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, said he is confident in Mr. Cox’s leadership.
“Having worked closely with Mr. Cox on past initiatives for EVMS at the senior executive level, I know he has the temperament and forward-looking, strategic perspective necessary to guide the medical group,” Dr. Abuhamad says. “His long history with EVMS makes him uniquely suited to meet both challenges and opportunities with innovative ideas and a proven spirit of collaboration.”
In addition to his work at EVMS and Virginia Tech, Mr. Cox’s previous professional experience includes positions at Amerigroup Corporation and other healthcare companies. He is an alum of the CIVIC Leadership Institute Executive Program Class of 2017 and holds an MBA from Old Dominion University.
