Diabetes program makes U.S. News & World Report top 50 ranking
The Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH) diabetes and endocrinology program – a collaborative effort with EVMS experts in diabetes and endocrinology – is one of the nation’s top 50 hospital-based programs, according to the latest ranking from U.S. News & World Report.
The rankings, released Aug. 8, 2017, show that the SNGH program is ranked number 43 in the country and is the top-rated program in Virginia. This is the second year in a row that the diabetes and endocrinology program has earned a spot in the top 50.
The physicians are the same experts who see patients at the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center. The center, which opened more than 30 years ago in response to a dire need in the community, offers quality patient care, innovative patient education and groundbreaking diabetes research.
“We are glad that our collaborative effort with Sentara in diabetes & endocrinology continues to be recognized nationally,” says Elias S. Siraj, MD, Director of the EVMS Strelitz Diabetes Center. “It will encourage our world-class experts to do even more to improve patient outcomes and experience using the latest know-how and technology.”
In the overall rankings of hospital, SNGH was number one in the region and number two in Virginia. The hospital’s cardiology and heart surgery program has been in the top 50 nationally for 17 consecutive years.
Several other medical specialty programs listed as “High Performing” at the hospital also involve EVMS full-time or volunteer faculty, including geriatrics, nephrology, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology.
“EVMS and Sentara work together to provide many high-level specialized services unique in the region,” says Kurt Hofelich, Corporate Vice President and President of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. “We are proud to be EVMS’s primary teaching hospital and to have our collaborative work in Diabetes & Endocrinology recognized by U.S. News & World Report.”
The whole community benefits from the partnership between EVMS and Sentara, says Richard Homan, MD, President and Provost of EVMS and Dean of the School of Medicine. “We are proud of this ranking, but we are even more proud of the quality care our collaboration brings to patients.”
