EVMS celebrates International Medical Graduate Physicians Week
EVMS is joining the American Medical Association in recognizing International Medical Graduates (IMG) Physicians Week, Oct. 17-22.
IMGs make up about 21 percent of residents and fellows at EVMS, a figure that’s in keeping with the national average of 25 percent of the physician workforce.
“International Medical Graduate physicians play a critical role in the care of patients, to the American health care system, and to the physician workforce.,” says Linda Archer, PhD, Vice Dean for Graduate Medical Education. “The inclusion of International Medical Graduates in EVMS residency and fellowship training programs enhances our goal of creating a more diverse and culturally competent physician workforce.
The week will be celebrated with several events including career presentations, thank an IMG Day and a football game. See the full schedule below.
“We truly value our IMG physicians and aim to set them up for success as they begin their training in this new culture,” says. Dr. Archer. “We hope our program and this week of events will help us continue to develop a support network that makes them feel like a valued member of our community.”

October 17 - Career Pathways: - Join us in Waitzer Hall 200 at 1 p.m. as we hear from Ms. Olivette Burroughs, Statewide Health Workforce Manager, about pathways for J visa holders to remain in the U.S. to practice medicine in medically underserved areas.
October 19 - Thank an International Medical Graduate (IMG) Resident Day: - Our International Medical Graduate Residents are an integral part of the EVMS community. Today is Thank an IMG Resident Day and we would like you to join GME in thanking our IMG residents for all the work they do. They are a critical part of the healthcare team — please let them know that they are valued and appreciated.
October 22 - American Football is a part of the American college experience. Join Old Dominion University fans as they take on Georgia Southern University in their 2022 Homecoming game at the S.B. Ballard Stadium.
