EVMS chair to receive Virginia's Outstanding Faculty Award
The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia recently recognized Alfred Abuhamad, MD, as one of the top educators in the Commonwealth.
Dr. Abuhamad, the Mason C. Andrews Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs, and Professor and Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was named one of 13 recipients of the 33rd annual Outstanding Faculty Award, which is presented for excellence in teaching, research and public service.
“We are honored to see Dr. Abuhamad among those recognized for this great honor,” says Richard V. Homan, MD, President and Provost of EVMS and Dean of the School of Medicine. “His sustained excellence in all domains of academic life speaks of the talent and reputation he shares not only nationally and internationally, but at home in Virginia.”
An internationally known expert in ultrasound, Dr. Abuhamad was recently tapped to lead a multi-society task force to develop curriculum to standardize ultrasound teaching for OB-GYN residents.
The Fetal Cardiovascular Center, housed within EVMS Maternal-Fetal Medicine and led by Dr. Abuhamad, was the recipient of a $2.725 million grant from the National Institutes of Health in 2015 to study the human placenta during early pregnancy. The study was designed to search for early signs of pregnancy complications within the placenta, with the goal to improve outcomes for the mother and child.
“Whether I am mentoring a medical student, providing clinical care to a high-risk pregnant woman or leading ultrasound training in a remote village in Haiti, I strive to give my best and share all that I know,” Dr. Abuhamad says. “I am honored and so grateful to have been able to touch so many lives in my career, and I am humbled to be awarded the 2019 Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award.”
The 2019 Outstanding Faculty Awards ceremony will take place March 7 at The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.
