EVMS community encouraged to Choose Wisely
With the goal of encouraging conversations between patients and physicians to increase quality care, EVMS recently hosted the 2nd annual Choosing Wisely Day.
Choosing Wisely is an initiative of the American Board of Internal Medicine that aims to empower patients to ask questions about their care and to encourage physicians to consider all of the data before ordering unnecessary tests.
The EVMS event kicked off with a keynote discussion from Andrew Parsons, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Afterwards, students presented their research posters on topics related to high-value care and competed in an interactive “Shark-Tank” style innovation contest.
The Choosing Wisely winners included:
- Bhavana Nangunuri, MD Class of 2022
- Pooja Gajulapalli, MD Class of 2022
- Charlotte Chambers, MD Class of 2022
- Tamanna Sahni, MD Class of 2022
“We are proud of our students and grateful for the support from EVMS leadership for the continued success of this program,” says Brooke Hooper, MD, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine and Associate Dean for Clinical Education.
The event was organized by the 2019-2020 EVMS Choosing Wisely STARS, Lauren Keenan and Sudarshan Mohan, both members of the MD Class of 2022. STARS stands for Students and Trainees Advocating for Resource Stewardship.
“Their work in promoting high-value care has already received national recognition from the STARS program,” Dr. Hooper adds, “EVMS is often mentioned as one of the models for a successful program implementation.”
The upcoming 2020-2021 STARS are Saadhana Kukkala and Heidi Schoomaker, both members of MD Class of 2023.
