EVMS physician makes plea to Congress for women's health
An EVMS physician is asking Congress to ensure women and children have access to healthcare.
Alfred Abuhamad, MD, the Mason C. Andrews Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Professor and Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs, made the request on behalf of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, an organization he serves as President.
The U.S. currently has one of the worst infant and maternal mortality rates among wealthy countries. Adverse pregnancy outcomes not only affect the baby but are also a large financial burden.
Dr. Abuhamad asked our nation’s leaders to keep the following principles in mind when creating a new healthcare replacement package.
- All women who may become or are pregnant must have health coverage that provides all medically necessary, situation-appropriate benefits that promote healthy pregnancies and child development.
- All women must have coverage that is affordable for their families.
- All women must have access to the full range of appropriate health care providers and specialists.
- All women must have continuous, consistent coverage with no gaps in care.
